Bulgaria is
now sixth in the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) rankings for
emerging market destinations. The country was also ranked among the top 10
destinations for 2011 by both CNN and Lonely Planet. For its size, Bulgaria
offers a surprisingly diverse geography, including 350 km of coastline on the
Black Sea and the impressive Rila, Pirin, Rhodope and Balkan mountain ranges,
separated by beautiful plains, valleys and gorges.
Bulgaria's
highest peak is Musala at 2,925 m. The Danube, Europe's second largest river,
forms the major part (over 400 km) of Bulgaria's north border with Romania.
Bulgaria is becoming Europe's new adventure playground with many opportunities
for hiking, trekking, mountain biking, cycling and kayaking. Bulgaria has numerous
mineral water springs and also has many ancient monuments dating back to the
Thracian and Roman period and is rich in cultural, historical and architectural
sites.
